Are you eligible for reduced broadband tariffs?

Broadband has become a very popular way to connect to the internet due to the high speed and stability it can provide. Broadband ‘social tariffs’ may not be on your radar, but if you’re on a low income, they probably should be. Monthly bills keep rising and wages can’t keep up with increased prices. As a result, many of us are really struggling with the cost of living in the UK in 2024.

Free or discounted broadband if you’re on Universal credit

Ofcom have encouraged all broadband providers to offer discount broadband options for low-income households. These ‘social tariffs’ are designed to make cheaper deals available to those claiming certain welfare benefits.

How to claim your broadband discount

Check your eligibility
If you currently receive a benefit such as Universal Credit, Pension Credit, ESA or JSA, you should be able to claim a broadband discount with at least one provider.

Check your current broadband contract
If you already have a broadband account, check whether you are currently within your initial contract period. If you have more than a month left on your contract, you will likely have to pay a termination fee if you switch to another provider. However, if your current provider is one of those that offer a social tariff, you may be able to switch without penalty. See here or visit the Ofcom website.

Check provider availability
You’ll also need to check the coverage of the provider you want to switch to. To do this visit this dedicated page and enter your postcode.

Sign up for a social tariff
Once you’ve chosen your provider, you can sign up through their website or by calling their sales team. You’ll be asked for your National Insurance number to check your eligibility, so have it ready. If you sign up over the phone, make sure to ask for their ‘social tariff for universal credit claimants’ – they may not offer it proactively, so you need to be prepared to request it.
