Residents get moving with Tai Chi and armchair exercises
Tai Chi and armchair exercise sessions are filling Johnnie Johnson Housing residents with energy and enthusiasm. The classes aimed to promote physical activity and wellbeing among the community’s older adults.
Tai Chi session at Trenchard Court
The Tai Chi session took place at Trenchard Court, located in Droylsden, Manchester. Trenchard Court is a Independent Living development for 55s and over and is situated in a residential area in Tameside. In partnership with MCR Active, who work with and support many groups and organisations throughout Manchester, delivering anything from chair-based exercises, gentle circuit classes, led walks, health and wellbeing, and more.
The Tai Chi sessions are led by the qualified instructor, Vera Wang. The sessions will be running weekly for six-weeks at Trenchard Court and all residents are welcome to join in and increase their flexibility, strength and improve cardiovascular fitness.
It was a fun and exciting way to get our hearts racing.

Armchair exercise at Spey House in Stockport
Over in Stockport, weekly exercise classes have been taking place at Spey House for the past few months. The classes allow residents to work on strength, coordination, and a range of movements from the comfort of their chairs.
The instructor, Val guided the group through a series of exercises and adapted the movements to each individual’s abilities.
Community Housing Officer, Donna said “As I’m sure you can see, they all thoroughly enjoy the classes, they make me smile when I’m watching them.
They have good banter between them all, it isn’t taken too seriously and they are all building a great bond during these classes.
Val is an absolute diamond and really puts everyone at ease. She ensures they are all okay and rewards them all with a cuppa and biscuits after their exercises.”
Some of the feedback from residents was:
“The classes are something to look forward to and put a smile on our faces.”
“It gets you out of your flat.”
“Brings everyone together and helps forms friendships.”
